About the artist
Willie Birch was born in New Orleans, LA in 1942. After earning his MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Birch moved to New York where he began his career working in large-scale paper maché sculpture. Moving back to New Orleans in the late 90s, Birch’s practice shifted to large grayscale drawings and paintings that reflect the socio-political climate of New Orleans’ predominantly black neighborhoods. Forgotten corners of the urban landscape, community, rituals and the characters who inhabit these environments are all central to Birch’s work. Birch exhibits nationally and internationally while continuing to work in his native New Orleans.
