Carborundum aquatint is a painterly intaglio process whereby the various strengths of a brushmark is determined by the use of fine or coarse carborundum grit mixed in suspension with acrylic matte or gloss medium. Participants will use chip board, matt board, and plexiglass for the printing plates. Unlike traditional aquatint printed from copper or zinc plates where these metals will tarnish the colored inks, carborundum aquatint prints exactly the color that is mixed. Students will create an edition from a single plate as well as an edition from a multi plate image where registration is explained. As a master printer, Anthony Kirk introduced this process to artists such as Joan Mitchell and Emily Mason and examples of their prints will be shown.

Master Printer Anthony Kirk brings almost fifty years of professional experience to RBPMW. Born in Scotland, Kirk attended Art School in England before moving to NYC in 1974. In 1988, Kenneth Tyler invited him to head up the etching department at Tyler Graphics Ltd. where he etched and proofed plates for Helen Frankenthaler, Frank Stella, John Walker, Donald Sultan and Joan Mitchell. In 2000, Kirk established his own printmaking studio in North Salem, NY. Here he brings to each collaborative project, an accumulation of experience, thereby realizing in print, the vision of each artist whether established or new to the medium. He has also editioned at The Printmaking Workshop works by Mavis Pusey, Emma Amos, and among many others.

Classes include all materials (unless otherwise noted) along with free studio hours to use in the workshop. Class hours expire a month after the last day of the class. You do not need to pick-up any materials in advance to prepare for this class; once registered, you may come to RBPMW on the day/time of your class. You must cancel your registration 2 weeks prior to the start of the class to receive a 90% refund or 100% class credit. No full refunds will be issued after payment due to online processing fees.
