FROM PAPER COLLAGE to POCHOIR
Instructor: KAREN LEDERER
TUESDAYS + THURSDAYS
3/2, 3/4, 3/9 and 3/11
6:00 - 7:30 PM EST
This class will begin with an investigation into collage. We will discuss the history of the medium and look at artists who use it as a starting point for printmaking. We will make many collage studies working both with an abstract and representational visual language. We will play with various ways of breaking up paper from tearing to scissors and also play with creating our own materials by painting the paper just as Henri Matisse did for his cut-outs. Then students will pick their favorite collage and learn to translate it into a pochoir print. Pochoir is a form a printmaking that does not require a press. One stipples paint through homemade stencils onto paper. The end product has a distinct velvety texture and luminous color different from what can be achieved by any other painting and printmaking techniques.
Materials needed:
Paint
Stencil brushes (or can cut tops of normal paintbrushes)
Scissors
Paper
Exacto Knife
Glue
Mylar (ideally but anything can really be used for stencil material)
