Participants will learn about the different platforms for their writing, from self-publishing to pitching various art blogs and magazines, including how to reach out, to whom to reach out, and what to include.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to craft critical reviews of art exhibitions, performances, and other art-related events. We’ll also discuss how to tackle longer feature pieces that cover art movements, social and cultural topics, and individual artists.

Sean J Patrick Carney (b. 1982, Michigan) is a writer, visual artist, and comedian in Brooklyn, NY. He is the founder and director of Social Malpractice Publishing, an independent label that has produced over 50 different artist books and editions since 2009. Carney hosts and produces the weekly art and comedy podcast Humor and the Abject. His writings appear frequently in Art in America, VICE, and other outlets. From 2014-17, he was a faculty member and Outreach Director at the Bruce High Quality Foundation University, a tuition-free, artist-run education experiment. His performances and studio work have been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including MOCA, Los Angeles; Showroom MAMA, Rotterdam; Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago; Marlborough Gallery, New York; the Banff Centre, Alberta; ROCKSBOX, Portland; Bahamas Biennale, Milwaukee; and LxWxH, Seattle. He has taught classes at the aforementioned BHQFU, Brooklyn; Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland; New York University, New York; and Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond.
